Gastroenterology Fellowship, Royal Oak

About

The Division of Gastroenterology-Hepatology at Beaumont, Royal Oak offers a three-year comprehensive fellowship in Gastroenterology. The goal of our fellowship program is to prepare fellows for a career in clinical practice, whether in private practice or in an academic position, emphasizing consultative and endoscopic skills. Training in all endoscopic procedures includes 

  • diagnostic endoscopy (EGD, sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, enteroscopy, single balloon enteroscopy)
  • therapeutic endoscopy
  • ERCP
  • PEG
  • esophageal manometry
  • endoscopic ultrasound
  • capsule endoscopy

Fellows are expected to participate in clinical or basic research projects, to present their research at regional and national meetings, and to publish their findings.  The three-year fellowship is designed to provide the trainee with an excellent background in pathophysiology and management of gastrointestinal illness and liver disease, extensive experience and expertise in gastrointestinal endoscopy and non-endoscopic procedures, and familiarity with research techniques and concepts.  Fellowship training in hepatology is enhanced by our having a liver transplantation service at Beaumont, Royal Oak. The academic aspects of the fellowship training program are enhanced by Beaumont, Royal Oak, being the main teaching hospital of the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine.

Mission

Our mission is train highly competent specialists in Gastroenterology (GI fellows) who are superior in clinical knowledge, clinical practice, endoscopic procedures, academic endeavors, and research in Gastroenterology. To promote highly capable gastroenterologist-clinicians who will provide extraordinary and compassionate care in the community and to promote highly trained academic gastroenterologists who will teach and train the next generation of gastroenterologists at university hospitals.

Aims

  • Extraordinary exposure to clinical gastroenterology under the teaching of highly experienced gastroenterologists.
  • Extraordinary exposure to all the gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures, including ERCP and endoscopic ultrasound.
  • To closely supervise individual fellows to assure that ethical training is emphasized and duty hours guidelines are enforced.
  • To minimize work stress of GI fellows by closely monitoring their workload and the educational content during their training.
  • To emphasize quality of care of our patients, as well as educational and academic aspects of gastroenterology.
