Orthopaedic Surgery Hip and Knee Fellowship, Royal Oak

The Orthopaedic Adult Reconstruction Surgery - Hip and Knee Fellowship is a one-year program offering sub specialty training experience. The program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

  • over 2,500 primary and revision total joint procedures are performed annually

Mission

The mission of the Adult Reconstruction Fellowship program is to train knowledgeable, capable and compassionate orthopaedic surgeons in preparation for a sub-specialty practice focus in the surgical reconstructive treatment of hip and knee disorders. These disorders include primary and secondary degenerative disease, post traumatic sequelae as well as the treatment of failed total joint arthroplasty with or without infection. After completing the fellowship, graduates are capable of pursuing academic, small community as well as urban practice opportunities.

Aims

  • To prepare orthopedic surgeons for the sub-specialty practice of hip and knee joint arthroplasty by teaching the surgical skills, knowledge of pathophysiology and patient centered interaction necessary for successful treatment of disabling joint conditions.
  • To establish an understanding of the indications for surgical and non-surgical treatment options for primary and revision arthroplasty and to understand the risks, benefits and alternatives of these options.
  • To provide progressive responsibility for and experience to enable competent surgical management of disabling hip and knee conditions.
  • To prepare graduates who are capable of autonomously rendering surgical treatment of both routine as well as complex joint disorders.
  • To promote lifelong learning of new skills and knowledge by teaching the fellow how to assess and interpret medical evidence in the literature and when to apply it to appropriate selected patients throughout their career.
