Clinical teaching
Clinical training is done primarily under the supervision of our core faculty at four separate private practice locations around the greater Detroit area, giving our residents the opportunity to care for a diverse patient population with a wide variety of pathology.
Residents also manage the Ophthalmology consult and emergency services for Corewell Health – Dearborn, Taylor, and Trenton, ensuring ample exposure to pathology and traumas in both urban and suburban settings, as well as gaining valuable experience in managing these conditions/injuries.
Residents are provided a multitude of opportunities to hone procedural skills while in clinic under the supervision of core faculty (e.g. intravitreal injections, laser procedures, foreign body removal, minor oculoplastic procedures, etc.)
Second year ophthalmology residents rotate through every major ophthalmic subspecialty to not only gain further and deeper exposure of the field, but also have the chance to explore potential fellowship interests.
Surgical teaching
Operating room experience is acquired during each year of training with advancing resident surgical participation.
Basic extraocular surgical techniques are introduced during the transitional year internship and then advanced through the first year of residency.
Second year residents rotate through ophthalmic surgical subspecialty services during which they receive graded responsibility and are involved in progressively varied and complex surgical procedures.
Residents receive the bulk of their cataract surgery experience under the direct supervision of our core faculty during their third year, and are intimately involved in both the pre-operative evaluation/surgical planning, as well as post-operative care.
Access to an Eyesi surgical simulator as well as home wet lab equipped with microscope and phacoemulsification machinery to allow residents to hone their intraocular and microsurgical skill set.
