Call Responsibilities

During their time at Beaumont, Royal Oak, the radiology residents will be exposed to various types of call outside of their normal workday duties, including emergency, night float, and weekends. Beaumont, Royal Oak is a Level 1 trauma center with one of the busiest Emergency Departments in the country, exposing the resident to a high volume of cases with complex pathology.

  • ER call responsibility begins near the end of year one
  • ER call duties include weekday shifts from 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm and weekend shifts from 8:00 am - 4:00 pm and 4:00 pm - 9:00 pm
  • Residents also undergo night float (9 pm - 7 am) duties within the emergency department with 6 - 7 one-week blocks spread throughout the R2-R4 years
  • During ER call, all modalities are experienced
  • In the latter part of the R3 year, residents are excluded from all call responsibilities to allow for adequate time to prepare for the upcoming ABR Core examination

Moonlighting

Beaumont, Royal Oak has extensive opportunities to moonlight throughout the four years of training.  Both weekend and weekday shifts are available requiring coverage for potential contrast reactions in patient’s undergoing contrast enhanced imaging studies. Additional reading shifts are also available on the weekends and weekday evenings, providing excellent opportunities for additional experience. Moonlighting opportunities are based on seniority, with first claim to moonlighting opportunities given to year 4 residents. However, due to the abundance of moonlighting available, multiple shifts are typically given to the year 1 class every month. Opportunities are offered at Royal Oak, West Bloomfield and Macomb campuses.
