Corewell Health is the new name for Beaumont.

Medical Student Rotations, Trenton

Corewell Health Trenton Hospital  and Corewell Health Farmington Hills Hospital serve as base hospitals for Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine students.  All required and elective rotations are scheduled by the Medical Education Office.

The Corewell Health Trenton Hospital offers third and fourth-year medical student rotations in:

  • anesthesiology
  • cardiology
  • critical care
  • dermatology- 4th year only
  • emergency medicine
  • ENT
  • gastroenterology
  • general surgery
  • internal medicine
  • infectious diseases
  • neurology
  • OB/GYN
  • oncology
  • ophthalmology- 4th year only
  • orthopaedic surgery
  • pulmonary medicine
  • urology
  • vascular surgery

General Information

Scheduling

  • scheduling is arranged through the medical education office in conjunction with the various departments
  • all rotations must be scheduled for a minimum of four weeks, with the exception of General Surgery, Anesthesia and ENT, which may be scheduled for a minimum of two weeks

Obtaining schedules and reporting for duty

  • the medical student schedule includes weekend, night and H&P assignments
  • schedules are provided monthly by the medical education office
  • first day of your rotation you will report to in the medical education office at 8:30 a.m.

Hours of work

  • 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. or as designated by the service

Dress code

  • all students must wear white jackets
  • male students should wear a dress shirt and tie
  • female students should wear a professional-looking blouse and slacks
  • exceptions to this rule will be made only when a student is on a service that requires wearing a scrub suit

Meals

  • a stipend offsets the cost of meals while students are on duty

Clinical Procedures

Students are taught and supervised on the following procedures:

  • arterial blood gases
  • fetal monitoring, circumcision, etc
  • insertion of Foley catheters
  • insertion of IV catheters
  • insertion of NG tubes
  • phlebotomy
  • shortening and removal of drains
  • suture removal
  • other procedures, depending on student's ability 

All of the above procedures are performed at the discretion of the individual departments and under the supervision of a licensed resident or attending physician.
