Kathryn Ziegler, MD, FACS
Executive Director
Dr. Ziegler is the Executive Director of the Applebaum Simulation Learning Institute, where she develops and promotes the mission and vision of the SLI, by strategic planning, faculty engagement, proactive budgeting, and interfacing with hospital and
community leaders. She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Michigan, then attended medical school at Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA. She completed a seven-year general surgery residency at Indiana University in Indianapolis,
IN, followed by a fellowship in minimally invasive foregut and bariatric surgery at Indiana University, where she was very involved in surgical education. In 2014, she accepted a faculty position as a general and bariatric surgeon at Beaumont Hospital,
Royal Oak, where she became involved with the SLI in her role as the director of the general surgery residency technical skills curriculum. In 2017, Dr. Ziegler became the Surgical Director of the Marcia and Eugene Applebaum Simulation Learning Institute
and was named Executive Director in 2022. She is an active researcher in the field of simulation education, and a member of several national education committees, including the American College of Surgeons Accredited Education Institutes (ACS-AEI)
Research and Development Committee. She looks forward to the development of new programs, recruitment of additional talent, and the engagement of our faculty, in order to become national leaders in simulation education.
Angila Beard, RN, DNP
Operations Director
Angila Beard is the Director of Simulation and Clinical Education at Beaumont Health, William Beaumont University Hospital, in Royal Oak, MI. In this role, Angila supports employee education, an underpinning of patient and employee safety. Angila received
her Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree from the University of Michigan, later attending the University of Arizona, where she earned a Master of Science in Nursing Degree, with a focus in Clinical Systems Leadership. Angila’s passion for education
was a driving factor in her returning to the University of Michigan, to complete graduate work to earn a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. During her career, Angila managed the Specimen Laboratory at Beaumont Health for greater than 13 years. Experiences
during her nursing career includes Medical/Surgical nursing, Surgical Nurse Circulator and Nurse Educator. Angila is also a Leo Lecturer at the University of Michigan. The best role she has had the pleasure to serve in, is as wife and mother.
Katrina Holmes, MBA
Health Educator Clinical
Katrina, an MBA prepared Health Care Professional has a love of program analysis, development, and compliance. As such, she fully enjoys working with Program Leaders to develop programs that fulfill their vision. She believes continuing education is extremely
important to performance improvement and no individual or entity should be satisfied with the status quo.
Kelsey Bemus, ST
Health Educator Clinical
Kelsey is a certified surgical technologist, scrubbing primarily in neurosurgery as well as orthopedics, and also has prior instrumentation knowledge from working in sterile processing. Along with this background, she also teaches for both the sterile
processing and surgical technology classes at a local community college. She graduated with a bachelor's degree from Northern Michigan University in Clinical Health Science, and is pursuing a master's degree at the University of Michigan in Health
Professions Education.
Chandler Micallef, ST
Health Educator Clinical
Chandler attended Henry Ford College where he graduated with an Associate of Applied Science in Surgical Technology in 2015. Since then, he has worked as a surgical technologist at Beaumont Health, William Beaumont University Hospital, in Royal Oak, MI
where he specialized in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery for five and a half years, from there he went on to work with the general, trauma, and transplant surgery teams. After seven years in the operating room, he is now in a new role as health
educator, clinical in the SLI at Beaumont Royal Oak. He is excited for this next step in his career and looks forward to assisting in the educational growth and development of current and future healthcare professionals.
Lisa Baker
Program Coordinator
Lisa is a 41 year employee of Beaumont Health and has held various administrative support positions in Treasury Administration, Corporate Administration and The Beaumont Foundation before joining the Simulation Learning Institute in 2009. Lisa’s
years of service at Beaumont Health, provides historical knowledge and valuable resources. In her current role, Lisa coordinates every aspect of each internal and external program, training labs and events. Lisa is an avid fundraising volunteer within
her community and strongly supports the youth athletic programs.
