Research is showing that communication between surgical team members is key to improving patient safety and quality outcomes. The Applebaum Simulation Learning Institute provides a realistic environment to train a multidisciplinary surgical team of
- nurses
- resident physicians
- medical students
- practicing surgeons
- anesthesiologists
- certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA)
- surgical technologists
Two mock operating rooms with programmable patient simulators offer full-immersion team training. Entire OR teams can safely rehearse decision-making skills as they respond to simulated clinical scenarios.
In addition to learning teamwork and communication skills, the teams better understand crew resource utilization and crisis management. For patients undergoing surgical procedures this:
- improves team performance
- reduces errors
- enhances safety
- improves outcomes
During debriefing sessions following each training exercise, team members review their performance and critique their responses and decision-making skills.
The Institute is also poised to train medical professionals to better respond to disasters and other emergencies.
