Stay Active

Resident wellness is important and represents an integral part of our program. Our EM resident-run wellness committee is active in organizing a number of events both on and off campus. From social events and to volunteering activities and health promoting programs, we value that a balanced resident is best able to provide care to our patients and contribute to our community.

A healthy life outside of work is essential to maintain wellness in residency. Our medical center is located in Royal Oak, situated in southeast Michigan which provides our residents with fantastic wellness opportunities. You’ll have access to fantastic outdoor summer and winter activities, including metro parks, lakes, and skiing only a short drive away. We’re also located only 20 minutes from amazing cultural activities, culinary experiences, and professional sports in Detroit.

Volunteering

Two of our attendings, Dr. Brian Felice and Dr. Laura Ortiz, volunteer with OUWB Street Medicine Pontiac. This organization, started by medical students, aims to bridge the gap between the homeless members of our community and healthcare providers.

“We volunteer on a weekly basis with a group of OUWB medical students to serve the community. Every other week we spend an evening at the Hope Shelter in Pontiac seeing patients in a clinic basis, listening to their concerns, treating what we can and helping them navigate the healthcare system and get connected to other resources. The alternating weeks we are on the streets of Pontiac looking for those that live on the streets, offering medical care, support and resources as we can.”

Intern Retreat

Our 3-day PGY1 retreat in July provides a venue for residents to get to know each other and learn about the program. Team building exercises and mini-lectures focus on a number of important topics including fatigue mitigation, delivering bad news, organizational methods, and leadership among others. We certainly also find plenty of time for some fun in the sun and on the water.

Women in Medicine

Women in Emergency Medicine

We have a strong group of female faculty within the Department of Emergency Medicine who serve as excellent role models. As a group we make sure to come together yearly.

We make sure to remain focused on the next step after residency in addition to wellness.

Health and Fitness

A healthy lifestyle and commitment to fitness during residency can help provide balance. Our wellness committee sponsors a number of health and fitness activities throughout the year. These include yoga sessions before Thursday didactic sessions, sponsorship of the resident/fellow council soccer team, group bike rides and running events, apple orchard visits, and a ‘friendsgiving’ dinner.
